It’s been a long while since the last Shack four-way, but- much like with buses- you wait a frickin’ age and TWO COME ALONG AT ONCE!
Mr. Schlienz begins this first long, strange journey in a blissfully gentle fashion, all feather-light synth, peaceful summer ambience, woozily down-pitched voices and gorgeous loops drifting in from a distant Renaissance fair…moving forward, the Mink + Mutton boys have broken cover with their first new jams since 2016- industrial-strength drones coated in carcinogenic gunk of unknown origin and face-meltingly corrosive rhythmic wah-noise are the order of the day here! Flip sides and you’ll find none other than US underground legend Robert Horton greeting you with three odes to Mother Nature- beautifully unclassifiable sounds of the highest order, featuring some deft erhu playing from guest Michael Shannon on “Wind Rising”…rounding things off is an ear-slaughteringly epic pile-up of lo-fi guitar torture from old pal of the label, Acrid Skull!

Pleased as punch to have a SECOND monster four-way to offer ye…kicking off this stellar line-up we have Norway’s own Andreas Brandal, coming at you with a suite of glitching, twitching, crunching, grinding, sizzling, droning avant-garde mastery…hot on the heels are two slabs of dark age dirgery from Grey Dungeon Groaner…you won’t find any of that cosy, fluffy crap or wannabe LotR soundtrack boredom that passes as ‘Dungeon Synth’ these days here- no, these old school gems will have you rattling yer chains and chewing on a rotten rat carcass in no time! In complete contrast, the B-side sees Canada’s finest, the Cousins of Reggae blast holes in your poor, suffering sub-woofer with their unique brand of weirdly catchy psychedelic sludge rockin’, after which it’s up to Tabitha & Lulu to bring the curtain crashing down with 20 splendid minutes of cacophonous murk…helium voices babble, sun-dazed harmonicas wheeze, filthy feedback scorches and crud-caked drum machines go positively batshit- all for you, squire!

It’s back- the ‘drum and bass’ improv smash of summer 2011…riper, ruder and even more fetid than last time around, thanks to the inclusion of a bonus gaseous emission, which was lovingly brewed between 2019 and 2020. Go on, take a deep whiff- you might like it…

* J.G.D. AZZOPARDI “PHONE SEX FOR DUCKS” – A BELATED UPDATE *
Forgetful fool that I am, I failed miserably to share the exciting news that my “Phone Sex for Ducks” album received a handsome cassette issue via the ever-excellent MOON MYST MUSIC imprint back in the summer!
While it’s still available to stream/download, it would appear that physical copies are no longer for sale via the label’s Bandcamp site, though you may be glad to know that I have a few tucked away safely in a shoebox- if anyone wants one, consider it a done deal at £5.00 (not including shipping). See above for the relevant info re: how to purchase my wares.
The cassette has garnered some favourable reviews from those whose eardrums it hath tickled, not least Bandcamp user Ben Harris, who said the following:
“As utterly unclassifiable and impossible-to-pigeonhole as this album is, I still have a sneaking suspicion that a story is being teased out of these four (at turns) wacky and unsettling tracks. Well worth a listen if you want some narrative-charged noise that isn’t all about harshness and extremity“
Meanwhile, Ryan over at Cassette Gods had this to say:
“It’s creepy, I get it. And I live on a retention pond, so I get to see actual duck sex more often than I’d like. But thinking about a duck on the phone quacking away all sexy like while another duck on the other end of the line rubs one out with a wing or whatever gets the ick up in me. It’s just not something I want to think about. The obvious pre-doing-it ducks on the cartoon-strip cover don’t help.
J.G.D. Azzopardi doesn’t give a shit what I think. The Shack in the Barley honcho has decided that no matter what the taboo is, he’s going to break it, and damn my aversion to anatine coitus! On Phone Sex for Ducks, Azzopardi ratchets up the atmosphere, shoving dense noise collage after dense noise collage (four of them!) through my tape deck until I’m squirming on the floor in anguish. On the title track itself, telephone rings smoosh up against audible tension in a Twin Peaks–esque nightmare of wondering if and when the duck will actually answer. The phone continues to ring!
And Phone Sex for Ducks plows down its tense path until resolving itself somewhat with “Cemetery Improv – Sarah’s Grave,” which features some of what I can only refer to as “playful noise” – whatever that even means. It’s an odd, fitting end to this tape, leaving you skipping off into whatever it is you skip off into after whatever it is Phone Sex for Ducks is ends. That is until the skies darken and the aliens come and steal you away. Honestly, talk about a buzz-harsher.
Despite my feelings on the whole subject, this is riveting stuff“
Thanks to Ben and Ryan for the kind words and to Dan at MMM for putting the cassette out!
Wow, like it even needs saying, but WHAT A TITANICALLY SHITE YEAR it’s been!
As was to be expected, the gremlins and spanners were out in force for a fair portion, meaning the old release schedule didn’t quite go as it should’ve, but what can you do?! Anyways- we got there in the end (literally…on the last freaking day)! Thanks to everyone that contributed their fine music to this latest cassette batch and to everyone that supported the label throughout 2020- it’s much appreciated.
Here’s hoping that 2021 goes a touch smoother for everyone than this utter shitfeast!
Until the next update, bye for now…
