FREE GONK – volume 13 “The Horizon Grew Dimmer”

This month’s slice of FREE GONK fun comes courtesy of A RUMMAGE THROUGH THE ARCHIVES…

“The Horizon Grew Dimmer” (Shack in the Barley Productions, shitbar074)

1. Soft Snow on Red Brick Fantasia (13:03)
2. A Drone for the Bog at Dusk (8:39)

Here we have two hazy improvs cut ‘way back’ during the good old days of late 2005/early 2006. Both pieces feature TGG’s ‘trademark’ sleepily plunked Spanish guitar at their heart, drifting alongside a bunch of other mellow, melancholy stuff- wasted sounding electric lead, ethereal wine glass pings, murky synth drone, sweet/sour falsetto vox, featherlight wisps of radio static, primitive percussive patterings and the distant chattering of trains riding through the chilly evening air…

You could say it was all downhill after this…

This EP might appeal to admirers of early Six Organs of Admittance, Charalambides, late-’80s Jandek, Loren Connors, The Blithe Sons…and other sad, lonely sounding DIY shit along these lines…but enough name-dropping…
