B1) Bull On a Beach Ball II (5:30)
B2) Moss Off a Toad’s Bollocks (6:47)
B3) An Aesthetic Without Anaesthetic (9:29)

I started this one simmering on the sonic stove in what, late 2011, then sorta left it to dry out and generally go a bit mouldy for a bit, while all manner of other audial dishes were cooked up and served in its stead…but, after a bit of a reheat and a sprinkling of magical herbs, I think I’ve finally got it tasting pretty scrumptious for Shack’s autumn 2018 menu…a warning, though- I might’ve left a few bones in the mix, so don’t break yer teeth…

C2) Fast-Forward Doom (5:51)
D1) Fast-Forward Doom II (18:33)
D2) Last Balloon Ride Over Toytown (10:45)

The second gigantic expulsion of gooey noise ooze in less than a year from Sky Sacrifice, which now handsomely sports an exclamation mark after its name (for pretty obvious reasons)…but, sure enough, even the ‘necromancer’ must ‘die’ too some day…kinda ironic, really!! The tanks are bloody well empty, guv…

R.I.P. Sky Sacrifice (2014 – 2018)

Two C60 cassettes (the first pink, the second black) in a chunky double case with full colour artwork and tape labels, plus inserts.

A3) Dark Peak (9:28)
B1) Hot Germany (16:47)
B2) Sip & Trip (6:15)

Another ye olde crusty CD-R title rescued from the OOP abyss and given a tasty cassette reissue for its 10th birthday!! So- what we got?! A thick wad o’ 2006-08 folk-psychin’, cult-dronin’, flange-rockin’ frippery, which was simultaneously MANGLED and MOLLYCODDLED to a backdrop of lonesome late summer apeshittery/forbidden fruitery…

No spiders were harmed in the making of this album!!

Green transparent C50 cassette in a clear case with full colour artwork and tape label, plus an insert.

Body Morph / Demon Wind / Culver / Stinking Bishop – Split (Shack in the Barley Productions, shitbar160) – £4.00 (not including shipping)

Body Morph:

A1) Junk Panic (18:01)

Demon Wind:

A3) Eggs Full of Maggots (4:38)

Culver:

B1) Laura Was Never Found (23:38)

Stinking Bishop:

B2) Sleeping On Beast Fur (1:57)
B3) Der Hexentöter von Blackpool (19:35)

After a deceptively subdued intro, Body Morph gets this latest slab of four-way fun kick-started by violently cranking things up to 11, dragging you on a stop-start hellride through neighbour-bothering tape hum, crunchy / scummy electronics and the kind of red raw horn abuse that never fails to get ol’ Adolphe spinnin’ like a freakin’ wind turbine in a hurricane…Demon Wind (aka Steve out of Unlikely Dreamfellows) keeps things skanky for the remainder of the side, offering up a trio of minimal noisewerks that flash and flicker from sexy slime green to deep fart brown…over on the B-side, Culver legend Lee Stokoe emits thick, dark grey plumes of sonic crematorium smoke from your speakers for 23 full minutes, choking out your listening space, staining your wallpaper and suffocating all small furry creatures in the vicinity in the process, before Stinking Bishop bring the C92 curtain crashing down with a thick wad of their signature IQ-of-a-banana, knuckle-dragging barbarian free sludge jamming…now come on- with their ties to the whole Executed Flesh/Werwolf Ale Brewery cult, would you expect anything less?!

B1) Grey Sky Hoedown (Cliffs Delirium) (7:08)
B2) Ride the Yellow Goat (7:47)

Low and alone, but free to heal…wallowing and wading, detoxing with every drip…plunking on the cold past, wriggling with the worms…burning holes in the traffic, praying for direction…

Acrid Skull & The Golden Gonk – “Tortured Axes” (Shack in the Barley Productions, shitbar162) – £3.50 (not including shipping)

Acrid Skull:

A1) Leaking Batteries (Excerpt) (10:04)

The Golden Gonk:

A2) Untitled (Excerpt) (9:43)

Acrid Skull & The Golden Gonk:

B) Tortured Axes (17:54)

Ahh, the ‘Tortured Axes’ fest…it’s hard to believe that this veritable seaside KNEES-UP (which doubled as a release party for the first- and regrettably the only- issue of FREQUENCY BSE ‘zine) was ten full years ago now, but them’s the breaks I s’pose…not to worry, though- with the release of this here tape, the heinous passing of time is rendered near NULL and VOID…yes indeed- thanks to the archaeological vault diggin’ efforts of Acrid Skull main-brain Clifford, YOU the listener can re-create the fest’s particular gloomy, drawn-curtain living room ambience in your *own* gloomy, drawn-curtain living room WHENEVER YOU WISH, just by spinning the stellar recorded-live-on-the-day Skull and Gonk material on the A-side!! Let me tell you- I’ve tried it and it’s UNCANNY!! Anyway- like that wasn’t exciting enough on its own, all’s ye gotta do is flip over to the B to hear a damned DUET between these very same timewarping twangdoodlers…yes, it’s official folks- at the start of this year whilst we were emailing back and forth about the release of the live stuff, I managed to tempt Cliff out of retirement long enough to record a loving ‘decade-on’ tribute to the very gig at which we first met (aww!!) to bring things full circle…and yeah- it might’ve just been the effects of the particularly potent decaf tea I consumed that afternoon, but I could’ve sworn he said he maybe wanted to record some *more* junk in the near future…well, consider my breath well and truly held!!

14 Graves of Interest – “Unseeable Atrocities” (Shack in the Barley Productions, shitbar163) – £3.50 (not including shipping)

A) Slash of a Samurai (18:53)
B) Homunculus in Glass (16:42)

I stood by the train tracks and heard it calling…on a dull, clouded morning I felt it forming…I wandered the dust path, scratted for clues…I sat in the saloon, but it just didn’t feel right…somewhat disheartened, I hung on in there…nothing made sense, but since when was that a problem??

Toucan Lifecycle – s/t (Shack in the Barley Productions, shitbar156) – £3.50 (not including shipping)

A1) 11:03 (11:03)
A2) 8:46 (8:46)
B1) 10:09 (10:09)
B2) 9:28 (9:28)

Crucial cassette reissue of the beyond-private debut CD-R from Katie Richie’s Toucan Lifecycle project, which was patiently pieced together between 2011 and 2012 in a quiet, muddy, hilly region of Northern England. With this in mind, it’s all the more remarkable then that you could quite easily soundtrack your next juiced-up/tripped-out tropical beach holiday with this tape- those sun-scorched fuzz organ figures, that bustlin’ critter loopage, the gorgeous cool breeze synth…failing that, I’m sure it’d sound just as good playing during your next stroll to the shop to buy crisps and a scratchcard…just sayin’…

The Swiss Loaf Bakers vs The Golden Gonk – “Filthy Tape Soup 2001-2002” (Shack in the Barley Productions, shitbar157) – £3.50 (not including shipping)

A1) Skyscraping / Gong of Love (18:01)
A2) Autumn of Discontent (And Dial-Up) (10:38)
A3) Such Profound Self-Indulgence (16:09)
B1) Talking Trout in the Rockery (10:05)
B2) A Saturday in Camulodunum (14:57)
B3) The Golden Age Began Ropily (19:02)

I never did pull my weight in that smoke-shrouded shell, that hollowed out hovel…elsewhere and ‘out there’, no time for his ‘strange chords’ or those suspect floppy disks…an ear to the amp, the other in the wilderness…still, a preferable misery to those months in the pigsty or those tears on the ivories…roll on spring and that fresh lick o’ blue paint, roll on summer and the heat haze levitations…come the autumn I puffed with dragons, splintered in the sawmill…come the winter I skulked in the crannies, heart heavy and somewhat slightly broken…

A1) Cold Highland Echo (3:59)
A2) Man Has Lute (0:45)
A3) Glass Frogs and Pigeon Bullets (2:57)
A4) Guru Tavern (3:18)
A5) Isola di San Michele (2:39)
A6) Don’t Look Now (3:05)
A7) Sadness of Cars (3:08)

MMIV:

B2) I Didn’t Get Knifed (3:06)
B3) Guru Crossing (3:04)
B4) It’s 1850 and I’m a Chimney Sweep (3:09)
B5) Gobshite (2:53)
B6) Graveyard Drinker (4:06)

I saw red, for sure…in anticipation more than anything- I mean, we nearly lived it! Lost and late for bed, following the rabbit- pizza long since settled, greetings lost to smoke and blather…I stayed behind, “gave something of myself”, then dined sadly- no room in their restaurant…differing woes in more nascent times- I wanted in on something else, pitched my tent and held my nerve…plotted ‘neath the jet stream…pondered in the greasy spoon…tempted by treasures on all sides…held it close, but never got the goods…

Poverty Metal – “Miserable Hunger of Occult Crows” (Shack in the Barley Productions, shitbar159) – £2.50 (not including shipping)

A) A Crow of My Dungeon (4:33)
B) Moaning Into Some Occult Gloom (4:32)

Sorry for pushing the release date for this single back by a few weeks…shit, I *had* to- the pre-order interest *alone* would’ve catapulted this to the Xmas #1 spot, for damned sure…I relayed this info to the guys in Poverty Metal, who- quivering and weeping- told me they’re JUST NOT READY for that kind of success and all the crap that comes with it…the stadium gigs in front of braying, faceless mobs…the humiliation of being gunged on Saturday morning kids’ TV…the blinding flashbulbs of the paparazzi…not to mention the decades spent cosying up alongside Wham!, Slade and Wizzard on those infernal NOW! Xmas comps…so- with all this in mind- they demanded I delay the release and burn most of the pressing (still smoking away nicely…sorry, neighbours)…sales of the remaining (extremely tiny) handful of copies will probably still earn PM a top 5 chart placing, a gold disc and a coupla Smash Hits covers, but not much we can do about that…

The Golden Gonk – “Skeletons Waltz on the Dirty Pier” / “I Don’t Show in Mirrors” (Shack in the Barley Productions, no cat. no.) – £4.50 (not including shipping)

“Skeletons Waltz on the Dirty Pier”:

A1) Seven (7:17)
A2) Nine (9:09)
A3) Four (4:04)
B) Twenty Four (24:24)

“I Don’t Show in Mirrors”:

C1) Spontaneous Appreciation of the Tendency to… (7:07)
C2) Seagulls Sing Sweetly in Summer (17:17)
D1) Straight to Heaven (17:17)
D2) …Split Along Definite Planes So as to Yield Smooth Surfaces (7:07)

Another double reissue set to round out this final batch of the year- “Skeletons Waltz…” is the sound of the young Gonk set loose in the tool shed (and not for the last time!), following a particularly potent (over)dose of “Changez les Blockeurs” (or was it “Black Vase”?!), while “I Don’t Show in Mirrors” is made up of tracks dreamed up near a fountain during the ‘summer of self-sabotage’, then recorded in the midst of another blasted evacuation…dear me- you can’t half pick ‘em…

B2) 10:43 (10:43)
B3) 9:17 (9:17)

Four-ways…you wait a year for one to come along, then by the next batch another has popped up OUTTA NOWHERE!!

Québec’s fantastic electric wizard Charles Barabé opens the show with a suite of glacial microtonal drones, sinister glitches, deserted school classroom piano tinklings AND MORE, before my own project Howl of the Lacerated brings the tone WAY down with a couple o’ scummed out paeans to atrocities committed whilst donning an unconvincing Sasquatch costume…on the flip we get a ginormous pearl of raw loopage, super-FX’d acid guitar and mutant RY9 rhythms from Sonic Oyster boss Andrew Paine, after which Katie Richie (of Unlikely Dreamfellows) brings things full circle with some glorious light and shade minimalism from her Toucan Lifecycle trip…

C3) Besombes & Bower in a Blender (9:25)
D1) New Age Werewolf Colony (4:08)
D2) Sacrificed to the Sky (21:53)

OK, I was late to the party- forever tardy, hovering in humidity…head in the clouds, but an eye on the prize…the funeral flowers were still fresh back then and the rocks fell thick and fast, awaiting times of glory…some corpses need exhuming, y’know…some have more to scream…

B3) Strawberry Solstice (3:43)
B4) Pony of the Barley (4:58)
B5) Slivers of Time (With You in the Background) (12:28)

The ‘self-releases’ ostensibly sprouted from a crude electric seed, planted hastily in wax, one way-back winter afternoon, which brought forth a bumper crop of untold proportions!! This tape gathers together some of the tastiest treats harvested from that hidden hillside, shorn of all the soggy, rotten, rodent-nibbled bits!!

B3) Subtle Skull (20:17)

Yes, here it is again- the free MP3 smash of 2012 (15 downloads and counting!!) in a super exciting “in exchange for cash” tape cassette version!! Fully sanctioned by all the surviving members of this confrontational and obscene guerrilla folk noise unit, who notoriously laid waste to multiple impromptu ‘venues’ across a certain UK university campus in the early ’00s, this “Year of the Rooster Edition” comes complete with precisely ZERO extra material (at no extra cost!!)- how kind!! 11) Lion Fed to Something Mystic (1:42)
12) Seven Levitations (2:51)
13) Winos on the Church Steps (2:58)

Ah…the green shattered dream…something to do with circuses and Alex Harvey, if I remember it right…all these songs were written circa late winter/early spring 2008, quite often in the dead of night, in-between frenzied last second bidding wars with ‘voiceofmuck’ on eBay (yeah- remember those?! I never won…no one did!!)…they’re full of the usual stuff- nostalgic ruminations…animals…weather girls (*always* weather girls)…the plan was to record ’em properly, but- whoops- there was no room at the inn on the 8-track back then, so they got no further than a warbly C90 (previously home to The Jam and Badfinger, apparently!!) and have remained unheard by humanoid ears since then…now all that changes, friends…

Jamie Azzopardi:

A2) Perpetual Lust Limbo (11:27)
A3) A Woman on a Lizard’s Tail (6:57)

Bear Bones, Lay Low:

B2) Arenas dilatadas (7:47)
B3) Las mentes primitivas (2:49)

Salad With Ganesh:

B4) Constantly Playing Black Lace and Jive Bunny Hits to Ward Off Evil Spirits (19:36)

Rejoice- mammoth four-way number four is here at long last!! And it’s a real head-stomper…

Drone King Neil Campbell offers up “Free Meat for the Hippies”…and seasick rainy day ambient wowings laced with squealing wheedlings *plus* a side order of zonked out garbled voices for everyone else…just as tasty!! My own contributions were cooked up one summer back in the haze of some hopeless situation or other…oh well…so long and thanks for all the tunes!! Bear Bones, Lay Low’s Ernesto Gonzalez reputedly committed his fine suite to tape whilst visiting a festival on a farm in France…odd synth noises dart atop earthy dronage and bongo fury like sinister fireflies…Salad With Ganesh close proceedings with a massive assemblage of Kraut bass pulsing, dangerously deranged synth fuckery and what sounds suspiciously like every crap church hall disco I attended in the late ’80s/early ’90s happening all over again simultaneously- truly terrifying!!

Robed rumination, faceless in the keening wind- our man in the South, spotlighted by a shaft of sun…the atmosphere of salted string melts into the tavern walls, melancholy ricochets and flutters through the static snows…all time is one, shadowed and haunted, baptised with sea spray…a seasonless standstill- echoes on the spiral stairs, a ghost in every brushstroke…

The Fossil Tree / The Golden Gonk – “Seaside Moods Vol. 3” (Shack in the Barley Productions, shitbar146) – £3.50 (not including shipping)

The Fossil Tree:

A) Noise by the Sea (18:19)

The Golden Gonk:

B) Night of the Seagulls (16:56)

Mystic Dan of The Fossil Tree unwittingly *risked his life* (or at least his socks and trainers) to bring us the A-side of this tape…there he was, merrily skipping through the crab pools of Blackpool beach on a glorious sunny day, field recording device in hand- not a care in the world…until the tide decided to cut him off, leaving him with no option other than to go a-wading!! Eyewitness reports suggest the obstructing waters were no more than ankle-deep, but Mystic Dan assures me he nearly died for the sake of this curious collage of blasting Bispham winds, squelching sands and lots of fucking swearing…I, on the other hand, merely had to watch a ‘Blind Dead’ film to get inspiration for my side- probably a fate *worse* than drowning horribly in the icy Irish Sea to most, but hey- I dunno, I quite enjoyed this one!!

Fornicating Fog – “Anointing Deer With River Scum” (Shack in the Barley Productions, shitbar023) – £3.50 (not including shipping)

A1) Untitled (7:39)
A2) Untitled (18:09)
B1) Untitled (17:11)
B2) Untitled (6:27)

For all of about five minutes in the mid-’00s, Fornicating Fog was a quartet, boffing out massive albums of dark free doomic ambient improv forest noise sludge, of which this was the second, and- if you ask me- is probably the one where the aesthetic mulched together the be(a)st- a two-part phosphorescent marshland jam bookends an enormo-stretch of drop-A molasses riffing and a slab of rusted, toxic electronics…nice, though I recommend getting a tetanus shot after listening…just sayin’…the CD-R version of this vanished aeons back, so this 10 year anniversary cassette reissue is very timely indeed!!

Yellow transparent C60 cassette in a clear case with full colour artwork, plus an insert.

The Sun Sun Boys / The Ice Cream Kids – “The Sun Sun Boys Ate The Ice Cream Kids” (Shack in the Barley Productions, shitbar025) – £3.50 (not including shipping)

The Sun Sun Boys:

A1) Miarfrghh (1:19)
A2) Ouafouaf (2:31)
A3) Iiiiiiiiiiiii Heu (5:34)
A4) Zbam Ponk Bunk Bott Zbaaff (3:09)
A5) The Sun Sun Boys’ Theme (2:25)

The Ice Cream Kids:

B1) Toutankhiteuf Zaaaaaa (2:29)
B2) Vrooooo Baoom Aaaaarg Drrrrrra (3:30)
B3) Zey Are Bacs! (5:23)
B4) Op Seso’t Draihc (2:50)
B5) Neapolitan Reunion (5:36)

These duos (both comprising of David Sanders and I) were ‘formed’ in 2004 over MSN while on a summer break from uni- I use the term lightly, as when we actually got together to make music, we tended to spend longer on having tea breaks, running away from wasps and pissing off Gouranga monks in Preston city centre than actually making music…then, before we knew it, uni ended, Dave split for France and the Sun Sun Ice Cream dream melted away without so much as a single note being recorded…until spring 2007, that is, when I deigned to leave my Gonkcave to spend a few days in Montpellier!! This split album of Afro Velvets shambo-pop, distorto-twangy dronefloat and seemingly very real threats of legal action from a few chumps who took offence to us waggling a mic about outside a shopping arcade (yeah, good luck tracking our underground asses down, motherfuckers!!) was the end result. Fun fact- I listened to the master CD-R of this so many time on the way home that it made me feel a bit sick!! Anyway, this 10 year anniversary cassette reissue comes with two bonus cuts- one from each project. Sounds like a party to me!!

The Golden Gonk – “Flower Throats” (Shack in the Barley Productions, shitbar016) – £3.00 (not including shipping)

A) Cough Like Shattering Glass (18:18)
B) There’s Dust to Drink (18:18)

A welcome reissue for this album, which has been unavailable for a decade (dang, just how did you cope through all that time?!)…”Flower Throats” is ostensibly one huge piece- an extended teasing improv foreplay session, followed by a sweet pleasure plateau, then a Tantric drone rock orgasm- all pink pulsations, mauve headrushes and scarlet eruptions…violin, melodeon, percussion, vocals and multiple open-tuned electric guitars recorded in a single afternoon in early September 2006…

A2) Untitled (8:48)
A3) Untitled (6:15)

A5) Untitled (3:13)
B1) Untitled (17:03)
B2) Untitled (1:05)

“Improv for Annoying Helicopter”:

B3) Untitled (13:29)

“A Lobster…” was recorded over a couple of very mellow evenings in August 2006 and was inspired by an image I’d seen on a Polish postage stamp (yeah, yeah- I know…not *another* album inspired by a surrealist painting of a lobster sitting in an armchair, smoking a pipe, printed on a small adhesive piece of paper originating from Eastern Europe- yawn!!)…there was a police helicopter buzzing away somewhere off in the distance for most of the time that I was recording the Spanish guitar portion of the album, which you might be able to pick up on, though perhaps only if you have owl or bat ancestors…anyway- quite a nice little album with a peculiar atmosphere…can’t recall playing like this before or since- maybe it was the helicopter?!

PS- the bonus track was recorded in January 2017 and is exclusive to this reissue!!

A1) Sexy Compost (8:52)
A2) Plausible Oxymoron (9:27)
B1) Virgin Hooker (8:38)
B2) Evil Jesus (9:14)

Following on from a clutch of itty bitty releases- y’know, probs stuff like floppy disk EPs, novelty-shaped interview flexis, Betamax video singles of impromptu performances in Ashby-de-la-Zouch and 3 second teaser snippets only accessible via a crackly 1-800 hotline, this here cassette is- I’m reliably informed- the very first full length jammer from electrowhizz Mike Hertz!! Not that it matters, of course- whatever the release type, whatever the format, whatever the moniker, this cat’s shizzle always tickles your sweet spot in a humdingin’ abstract-psych-minimal kinda way- JUST the way we like it…so grip this tape pronto and err, be tickled!! Right on…

B1) Burning Wrists (4:19)
B2) Die by the Gavel (5:23)
B3) Scrotum (4:35)

Birthed from the smoke of that swingin’ palace, straight from the lizard’s nethers- a set of seaside contemplation…planning your life away on dead time, as numb as they come…waiting awhile ’til the fruit’s on the edge of decay, ’til the pond’s on the brink of stagnation, then awhile longer for good measure…but never mind the SHOCK and the SHRIEK of the times, never mind the SNOT and the SPUTUM- I said it all the same in the end…

B1)  Milky Minotaur – Bovine Eyes (14:15)
B2) Milky Minotaur & 14 Graves of Interest – The ’70s Slaughterhouse (Concluded) (10:01)

The death of the cow…a death that brought life…a death that brought sex…a death that brought soup…the moos turned to cries- cows did NOT enjoy the ’70s…the leering whirring, the immortal execution…the immoral exploitation- hey, “you got what you wanted”…waltzing and stabbing, through mist and deception…chasing and chunnering in amidst the dangled carcasses…the mounds of steaming offal…the streams of foaming blood…this is music to eat beef baguettes by…

The Golden Gonk – “Gonk Skronk” / “The Hollow Roll of the Egg” (Shack in the Barley Productions, no cat. no.) – £4.00 (not including shipping)

“Gonk Skronk”:

D2) The Lion Set Sail (13:28)

Two more “edition of diddly-squat” Gonk CD-R missives from ancient times brought back from the OOP graveyard and combined into this handsome twofer cassette set for your delectation…whew, try saying that quickly after a few rocks of crack!! But enough with the tongue-twisters, what of the SONICS?! “Gonk Skronk” was gonna be a double- a right old avant “sink blocker”, as they say in the business- until I wised up, sacked off the heinous detritus (some of it’s out there somewhere, no doubt, on the black market) and left ye with but two side-long monoliths of warped amp dredge, drowsy starlit minimalism and eerie coastal dreamhouse explorations!! “The Hollow Roll…”, on t’other cloven hoof, consists of a bunch of ‘otherness’ that slithered and shimmied my way during the same epic stretch of GETTING SHIT DOWN that slimed out not only “Gonk Skronk”, but the strange and sexy sisters “Individual Grace…” and “Hye & Hellow” too…end of sesh jams re: seafaring, misheard snatches of dining room conversation and wisdom tooth extraction…a lustful living room raga, in the shadow of ‘the horns’…a percussive flight of fancy…and some other bits!! Definitely sounds like a party to me…

Boredom…the BEST kind…not that I knew it then- where for art thou TUMULT?! Waiting in the wings, I s’pose- trapped behind a frigid wall of lethargy, desperately in need of new batteries…cowering, caramelised, coming through concrete- so long to all the longing and thanks for the crumbs…scatter them along the canalside, bury me in shadows, wield an ugly scalpel, play LOUDLY for the ‘ghosts’…
